Huff & Puff Engineering

Reaching our 50th mission brought us back to where we began, turning a familiar fairytale into a hands-on trial of structural engineering. By wrestling with wild straw, stubborn sticks, and tiny bricks, the kids moved from listening to stories to discovering how materials resist, hold, and yield under pressure.

Hitting our 50th mission was a quiet milestone for us as leaders as much as for the children. Moving from listening to stories to physically constructing them is where abstract imagination becomes tangible agency. We gathered under the shade of citrus trees, carrying bales of straw, bundles of sticks, and stacks of miniature bricks, inviting the kids to build three houses that could withstand the breath of the Big Bad Wolf.

The materials immediately resisted. The bale of hay was dry, loose, and caught every passing breeze, scattering across the grass. But real design thinking happens when materials refuse to cooperate. Chloe realized the dry hay was fighting her, so she ventured to a nearby patch of meadow to gather fresh, pliable green grass that bundled and glued far better. Leo carefully offset his bricks to construct a working chimney, Clara engineered a wide brick foundation to anchor her structure, and Nora measured her walls precisely to fit a tiny toy pig she had outfitted in handmade clothing.

Storytelling became structural engineering when the wolf arrived. Rather than simply knocking down the houses in a scripted play, the children used a wolf figurine and their own lungs to stress-test each structure. They observed which joints held, where friction failed, and why brick mass behaved differently than bundled twigs. They weren't just rehearsing a fairytale—they were investigating structural physics and cause-and-effect.

When the formal testing concluded, the children drifted toward the shade of the redwoods and a cool, winding creek. In the shallow water they skipped stones, dug through mud, and built tiny floating leaf-boats. It was not an unrelated epilogue. After a morning spent asking how straw, sticks, and bricks behave, they kept investigating structure, weight, current, and buoyancy—only now the questions were entirely their own.
